Raheen, a small village in rural Co. Wexford, is the first village in the country to launch it's very own local news and sports station. Using the latest in binder twine and cable technologies, The Raheen News channel brings you the latest breaking news as it happens, 4 hours a day, 2 days a week.
The Raheen News was made by young people from Raheen in 2007 during a filmmaking residency conducted by artist Michael Fortune as part of the National Youth Council of Ireland's 'Artist in Youth Work Residency Scheme'. This scheme aims to promote the development of arts practice with young people in non-formal educational settings, by supporting opportunities for young people to engage with professional artists and arts practice of the highest artistic and developmental quality.
The Raheen News takes a satirical look at commercial television news and parodies mundane regional and local news stories, sports and advertisements. The residency, which ran from July 2007 to December 2007, involved participants in the devising, writing, filming, production and promotion of the project.
Also contained on the DVD is a slideshow of photos taken by the group throughout the residency along with "The Making of The Raheen News" and a "Blooper Reel" from the making of the film. The film was officially launched on Wednesday the 19th of December, 2007 in Raheen Community Centre, Raheen, Clonroche, Co. Wexford.
