An Alternative History of Gorey is a short mock documentary that revisits famous historical events in the Gorey area. These include the establishment of a 24 hour supermarket in the town by the Vikings in the 8th Century, to pike men rebelling, not due to British rule, but instead due to the introduction of pay parking in the town.
This film was made during a film training programme conducted by artist/filmmaker Michael Fortune and facilitator Paul Dowling with the Post Training Group which are based in the Saoirse Centre, Market Square, Gorey.
The film training programme began in March this year and involved the budding filmmakers in all aspects of the filmmaking process from devising and writing a script to acting, filming and editing.
The DVD also includes two other short films which were made by the group during this time. "The Fishing Trip" is a short documentary made during a recent fishing excursion in Aughrim, Co. Wicklow while "Farewell" is a short film made on a computer webcam.
Also contained on the DVD is a slideshow of photos taken throughout the training programme along with "The Making of An Alternative History of Gorey".
The project was supported by the Department of the Taoiseach under the ASC Initiative 2006, co-ordinated by Irene Plazewska and Paul Dowling and delivered and produced by Michael Fortune. The film was officially launched on Tuesday the 21st of August 2007, in the Saoirse Centre, Market Square, Gorey, Co. Wexford.
